Some suggestions from IT on the lab’s computer security:
1. New lab users - Rebuild system from scratch (on an inherited machine). Everyone should have a clear understanding of what is on their system.
2. Former users - Archive data somewhere besides a lab machine before you leave. This allows any research data on the machines to be somewhere accessible in case machines get compromised by ransomware and having it encrypted.
3. Current users:
a. Check what software is on your machine. Uninstall what you don't know or don't need.
b. Check firewall settings. Make sure the applications have the bare minimum allowances for inbound connections. (Preferably restrict to the localhost or campus for most services or disallow connections in general.)
c. Strong passwords - Especially if they are setting up the computer for remote access.
d. Archive Data to Remote Server - Like CSIL or Box or Google Drive as cited for reasons in Suggestion 2
