If anyone is interested, we are hosting a talk tomorrow, Friday 19 August at 10am, by Dr. Jess Hartcher-O'Brian from UPMC and TU Delft.  The talk will be in the conference room, Elings 2003.  The title is "A cognitive science viewpoint on haptics and interface design".  Further details are given below.  Dr. Hartcher's expertise is in multisensory perception and action, spatial sound perception, etc.

Abstract 

My talk will focus on the latest advances in haptic interface design from a cognitive science perspective. I will explore why haptic displays remain so much more limited in their ability to communicate the rich and complex cues present in the world of touch in contrast to their acoustic or visual counterparts, such as headphones and video displays. 


Bio sketch 

Jess Hartcher-O’Brien is a cognitive neuroscientist and design researcher interested in the fundamental perceptual and cognitive processes in haptic and other interfaces. She is currently a post-doctoral research scientist at the University Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, working with Vincent Hayward on the role of invariance in haptics. In 2012 she completed a joint PhD between the University of Oxford, UK, and the Max Planck Institute, Germany, working with Charles Spence and Marc Ernst on the subject multisensory integration. Prior to her PhD, she researched spatial hearing and the rendering of acoustic features in virtual auditory space. As of 2017, Jess Hartcher-O’Brien will join the multisensory design lab at TU Delft as an assistant professor of Industrial Design.
