Subject: Invitation to meet Howard Rose this Monday, Nov. 3

Dear Jim, Brenda, Rich, David, Rebecca, Stuart, Krzysztof, Keith, Jorge,
Matthew, Ron, Rene, Robin, Norah, Susana, Brie, Christian, and Richard,

I invite you to attend a guest lecture this Monday, November 3, 10:00-10:50
AM, in my undergraduate course, Communication 156: Health Promotion and
Behavior Change. Location is South Hall 1431 and we have plenty of extra
seats (we have 40 students in a room that holds 80). Feel free to invite a
few colleagues or graduate students who might be interested. Sorry for the
short notice.

Our speaker is Howard Rose, president of Firsthand Technology
http://www.firsthand.com/, who gave a TEDMED talk about his work a few weeks
ago. He developed Snow World, a VR video game designed for pain distraction
for burn patients during painful procedures such as changing dressings. He
has also innovated in VR display technology and has developed games to
improve dental hygiene.

Howard will be available to meet from 11:00-noon with those of you who
attend the guest lecture and those of you who can't attend the lecture but
can arrive at 11:00 and want to meet then. We can go to the nearby meeting
room in our Center for Digital Games Research office, in North Hall, if
there are any of you who want to meet, or we can go to a larger conference
room if we have a large group. You can call my mobile number 805-698-3768
if you miss us after 11:00 but want to find us soon thereafter.

Howard Rose is president of Firsthand Technology, a design and development
company specializing in real-time, interactive 3D games that hold
significant potential to revolutionize how people can use computers to
learn, work and play. Firsthand's health games tackle such areas as medical
training, therapeutic pain management, and exposure therapy for PTSD and
phobias. Howard also served as the co-Principal Investigator and Lead
Designer on the Attack of the S. Mutans! Project, a multimillion dollar
project aimed at increasing children's self-efficacy in maintaining dental
hygiene. Howard got his start in virtual reality as a graduate researcher at
the Human Interface Technology Lab at University of Washington. An
imaginative, outside the box, and hands-on learner, Howard has other
creative pursuits including guitar, woodworking, and travel.

This NBC News video includes scenes from Snow World, about one-third of the
way into the video, and discusses research findings including fMRI changes
while playing the game during painful medical procedures:

Wounded Soldier Uses Video Game to Ease Pain

Imagine if doctors could prescribe video games for severe pain instead of
painkilling narcotics. . Lt. Sam Brown says playing a virtual reality game
has helped manage his pain better than taking morphine.

I hope to see you this Monday,

Debra
