Just FYI, there is a CS colloquium at 3:30pm tomorrow (below) about digital
TV that I hope many ILab folks will attend. There’s also Marcus Jang’s MS
defense at 1:00pm.

Title: New Developments in Digital TV



Abstract:



The discussion identifies three important current trends in the area of

Digital Television:(1) Mobile Broadcast TV, (2) Content delivery over

the internet to TV's, and (3) 3D Television.  The presentation will

cover broadly the technology and business aspects in these areas. The

status and direction of technology standards development in these areas

will be presented.  These new platforms create new opportunities for

innovative features, services and business models. Some recent examples

will be discussed.



Bio:



Nandhu Nandhakumar is currently SVP Advanced Technology at LG

Electronics, where he influences corporate business and technology

strategy related to the access of entertainment and information content

from network-connected CE devices, 3D entertainment in the home, and

mobile broadcast television. He leads standards development activities

in these areas, and is responsible for establishing strategic business

and technology partnerships. Earlier, Nandhu served as CTO and VP

Engineering of Triveni Digital, an LG Electronics company, where he led

the development of products for the management and monitoring of

metadata and data in DTV signals. These products have been deployed

globally in broadcast stations, network uplinks and cable head-ends of

the world's largest media companies. He has also served on the faculties

of UT Austin and University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and as

founder/director of the image and video processing group at LG

Electronics Research Center, Princeton, he led MPEG standards activities

and technology development for networked multimedia devices.  Nandhu

Nandhakumar has a B.E. in Communications Engineering from Madras

University, an M.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of

Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UT

Austin. He is a senior member of the IEEE's Consumer Electronics

Society, member of SMPTE and SCTE, and member of the Board of Directors

of ATIS and the Coral Consortium.
