Foglab denizens: please see the note below from Bob Hanson, and let Tobias
and me know if you see any problems/issues for the lab. I'm not sure what
dampers and re-heat valves are, and I don't know if we have a thermostat in
the lab. But if this means the lab will be freezing when there are people
working late at night, we should speak up.

Subject: Energy Efficiency Measure
As some of have no doubt heard over the years, Elings Hall consumes a
tremendous amount of energy - one of the top three or four on campus.
One energy reduction idea is to reduce the present 24/7 programming that
maintains the buildings HVAC conditions - more than a third of the
current energy budget for the building is in HVAC. The proposal is to
shift to an "unoccupied mode" in general use and office spaces during
off hours - off hours being tentatively defined as starting around 10pm
to midnight, and ending around 5am to 7am. And, Unoccupied Mode being
defined as closing dampers and re-heat valves.
Our observation is that such spaces are rarely occupied during these
times. Most laboratories are not being considered due to the nature of
those activities. However, if you are responsible for a lab which you
know to not require open dampers or re-heat valves on a 24/7 basis,
please let me know as soon as possible.
No changes are scheduled at this time, but preparations are being made.
Please let me know your thoughts, pro or con, regarding this proposal at
your earliest convenience.
Regards,
Bob
