UCSB has many outstanding students who could be strong candidates for these awards, but relatively few have applied for these scholarships in recent years, particularly from the College of Engineering.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Two years ago, a Faculty Selection Committee was formed, which includes one CoE faculty member, to select and endorse UCSB students for the Goldwater competition. We would like to encourage more students to apply for national scholarships this year (of the several scholarships I mentioned, the Goldwater is particularly suitable for CoE students). Faculty efforts in identifying, encouraging, and supporting stellar applicants were a large factor in UCSB's recent success in the Goldwater Scholarship: the campus had two Goldwater recipients and one honorable mention last year, and three recipients the year before. This is more than any other UC received for either year.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Your involvement is essential to our students’ participation and success in national scholarship competitions. I hope you will identify our most outstanding students and encourage them to apply for national scholarships.
