sensing traditionally uses 2D imagery and tries to sole
problems such as material identification and change
detection using spectral information. With the advent of
inexpensive active and passive 3D sensors which can be flown
on inexpensive drones, fast computing and efficient
algorithms to solve the handling of large amount of data an
entire new area of remote sensing research is becoming
possible. For example putting a measured spectrum into its
3D context allows novel ways of processing the data using
illumination based rendering and possibly retrieving
reflectances and bi-directional reflectances. Comparing 3D
voxalized areas allows quantitative volumetric change
detection. Entire environments can be digitized in 3D and
studied using virtual reality software.</p>
