We will look at a paper’s general structure with specific focus given to the significance of narrowing the problem space and the construction of logical arguments, as well as other important concepts including reader-oriented writing, genre, precision, tone, and strategies useful for redrafting and editing. We will also discuss how writers can develop content and fluency through practice with timed, unedited journal-type writing.<br>Our discussion will focus on three important sub-sections of a scientific paper -- Introductions, Data Commentaries, and Abstracts. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><b>Speaker Bio:</b><br>Dr. Janet Kayfetz, an Applied Linguist, teaches courses and leads workshops on effective communication. She has worked with science and engineering graduate students and postdocs nationwide, including: in the Computer Science Department and at the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB; in the CS Department at the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia; and at NYU, Columbia, and U Nebraska-Lincoln.
