Title: Imagination in Media Arts: Technical Constraints and Creative
Freedom
Ph.D Defense by Rama C. Hoetzlein
Committee: Tobias Hollerer (Committee Chair, MAT / Comp. Sci.), George
Legrady (MAT), Laurie Monahan (Art History)
Abstract:
Artists working with digital media explore a wide range of new and
unique techniques for developing art. Over time, technical limitations
may separate creative communities into groups that work with and develop
particular tools. The question examined in this dissertation is whether
tools to support creative freedoms for techniques found in different
tools can be combined into a shared framework for media artists and
scientists. To study this question, certain dimensions of creative
technique including 1) programming, 2) modality, 3) live performance, 4)
motion and dynamics, 5) structure and surface, and 6) image and idea,
are considered as aspects that media artists wish to explore. A novel
visual data flow language, LUNA, is developed to integrate these
dimensions into a collaborative, open system for creative exploration.
Technical areas of interface and language design are addressed to create
a practical system, which is evaluated according to creative software
metrics, comparison to other tools, measured performance, and specific
projects. Visual results using LUNA cover a number of interdisciplinary
collaborations and experimental works using hand drawn images.
