Subject: 13th year offering of the m259 Data visualization course

Dear Colleagues,

Please circulate to interested students that my lab will be offering the M259 data visualization course in Winter 2019. This will be the 13th year of doing the course.

Here is last year’s syllabus: https://www.mat.ucsb.edu/~g.legrady/academic/courses/18w259/18w259.html

We cover in 10 weeks, Knowledge discovery with MySQL; student develop visualization in 2D, and interactive 3D in the java-based Processing language and JSON for correlating multiple datasources, then students choose a topic of their own for the final project. For the first 3 projects we use data received from a project I have at the Seattle Public LIbrary consisting of hourly patron checkouts from the library received in a multi-dimensional format. Since 2005 we have accummulated over 90 million datasets, representing a broad topic range over 14 years,

Enrollment is limited to 15, and the course usually includes participants from Bren, COE, Geography, Statistics, Physics, Art, Political Science, etc. Students who have taken or have been teaching assistants for the course have since organized, curated paper and exhibition sessions at VISAP, Siggraph, etc.

Course Goals: To integrate 3 main interdisciplinary skillsets for Data Science: 1) Innovative skills in data discovery 2) algorithmic software development 3) advancing visual language methods
