On Tuesday morning the 14th of Oct, at 5am there will be a general building wide power outage to allow repairs to the solar power grid. The outage should be done and power restored by 10am. Emergency power will be available throughout the outage period. Hopefully this outage will take care of all necessary repairs, but it is possible that another outage will be necessary in the future. We know this presents an inconvenience to all building users and appreciate your patience. Some general information about the solar grid is below.
Regards,
Bob
"UCSB awarded a contract in mid-2015 to SunPower Corporation for the installation of solar photovoltaic systems at five separate sites on the UCSB main campus totaling over 4,800 kilowatts of peak generating capacity (equal to approximately 35 percent of the University’s peak electrical demand). The largest system generates 1,900 kilowatts and was installed at parking lot 38 at Harder Stadium. The system installed at the Elings parking garage generates 600 kilowatts at peak capacity.
Savings to UCSB in year 1 are calculated to be $270,000, and the rate for electricity from the solar systems remains flat for the duration of the 20-year contract. There is a production guarantee in place that penalizes SunPower if any particular system produces less than 97 percent of the expected annual power.
The ULD (Utility Lockable Disconnect) switch that needs to be opened ties the solar power into the building power. If the switch isn’t working properly the solar power can’t go into the building or the grid. The power is wasted. and SunPower needs to see what the problem is and what they need to do to make necessary repairs."
