Subject: Image & Acoustic Signals Analysis Research Assistant Professor
Dear Professor Turk,
I am requesting your help in identifying new or soon-to-be PhDs who would be interested in a new kind of academic position that truly combines research and teaching.
In 2014, Binghamton University began a Freshman Research Immersion (FRI) program, in which teams of research faculty design research courses and then work with a postdoctoral research assistant professor who guides freshmen and sophomores in innovative research. The students proceed through three courses (basic research methods in the freshman fall, beginning research project in freshman spring, and then follow-up research in sophomore fall), with about 30 students per cohort. More detail about the FRI program is available at: http://www2.binghamton.edu/fri/index.html
Starting in fall 2015, we added a new research stream called Image & Acoustic Signals Analysis, an interdisciplinary stream combining computer engineering and computer science. For this research stream, we hire a full time research assistant professor and expect that hires will be in the position for three years. Candidates must have a PhD before starting. This position is open to PhD’s with appropriate background in electrical engineering, computer engineering and/or computer science.
Under the guidance of the Research Assistant Professor the first two cohorts of students in this research stream conducted research on hand gesture recognition for sign language classification, gaze estimation for autism detection, and pose estimation for driver fatigue and awareness. Future projects will reflect mutual interests of the faculty team (including the research assistant professor) and the students.
The position is formally advertised at BU’s Interview Exchange:

Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Megan Fegley
