Dear colleagues,
We are very pleased to announce that the 2nd edition of our book, *3D User
Interfaces: Theory and Practice*, is now available! The first edition,
which came out more than 11 years ago, has long been a reference guide and
resource for students, researchers, and practitioners in our field, but
with the recent surge in interest in VR, AR, and 3D UIs it was finally time
to produce an updated version. The second edition has been re-built from
the ground up, with tons of new content, improved organization, more recent
references, and much more. Notable additions include two chapters on human
factors and HCI fundamentals, and two running case studies that discuss the
design of a VR game and a mobile AR application in light of the concepts in
each chapter. Joe LaViola is the lead author for this edition, and Ryan
McMahan also joined the team as an important co-author.
Apologies for the slightly ad-like nature of this post, but posting this on
the 3DUI mailing list does have a historical justification. Ivan Poupyrev
and I started the mailing list back in April 1998, and the early list
discussions brought Joe, Ernst, Ivan, and I together to propose a tutorial
on 3D user interfaces in March 1999 at the IEEE VR conference. The
materials we developed for that tutorial and subsequent ones formed the
basis for the first edition of the book!
We hope that this new edition will be a benefit to scholars and
practitioners, both those who have been in the field for years and those
just discovering it for the first time. And we’d love to hear your comments
and feedback!
*3D User Interfaces: Theory and Practice *is available on Amazon and many
other online book sites. Here’s the direct link to the publisher’s page for
