We have a prospective PhD student visiting today. I will probably drop him off at the lab sometime around 1:30 or 2:00pm, and I’m hoping someone will be around to chat with him. Is anyone around (Foglab and/or trailer) and available?

Thanks,

                Matthew

Piergiogio,

I’d be happy to talk with you while you’re in the area if I’m available. My June plans are still very uncertain (I have some as-yet-unscheduled travel and a shoulder surgery), but let me know when you expect to be available and we’ll see if we can coordinate a visit.

Regards,

                Matthew

Subject: PhD application Piergiorgio Lanza

Dear Dr. Turk,

My name is Piergiorgio Lanza. I am a prospective international student from Italy and I am interested in applying to the Ph.D program at UCSB for the Fall of 2017. I read your research profile as I was looking into the UCSB program and wanted to contact you as I am interested in applying end of this year.

Currently, I am working for Thales Alenia Space Company (Italy) as an Avionic Engineer. I have over 25 years of experience, my experiences as an engineer include space applications: feasibility studies; to the International Space Station facilities (EDR); and future prototypes. I was involved in different technological areas such as radiofrequency, on board computers, optical links, robotic, as well as digital image processing. In the last ten years, I worked in the field of digital image processing in particular for robotic applications, Entry Descent Landing algorithm and Rendezvous.

Besides working at Thales Alenia Space the last four years I have also been involved in teaching. I have taught Data Mining and Knowledge Management in Europe in the specific course of Image Data Mining. Last year in the Winter quarter of 2015 I was invited to teach at the California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) as a visiting Professor where I have taught the following courses:Digital Image Processing, Digital Signal Processing, DSP Lab, and Digital Communication.

Over the years I have really enjoyed teaching and I am very interested in the area of image processing. I would like to further my knowledge in the Image Processing subject by applying for a PhD position. After the completion of the doctoral program, I want to transition into a full-time teaching career in the field of image processing. I am very interested in the Ph.D. program at UC Santa Barbara and would like to know if I can have an opportunity to meet with you in person in the near future. Your work in the area of image processing has been very insightful. Your article with Pentland still remains a milestone in the image-processing field. This is made me contact you directly. It is my interest to increase my knowledge in computer vision, multi view geometry and human computer interaction. Your interest in the interdisciplinary approach is something I find common to my interest as well. My specific interest is to find ways to apply different techniques and algorithms of image processing to the old masterpieces of Renaissance paintings, manuscript, and/or ancient books.

In this email I am attaching a short bio and my CV with a list of my few publications. I am planning to visit Los Angeles in June to meet my fiancée. During this time of my visit, it would be a great honor if I can have an opportunity to meet with you in person. I would like to talk to you about the Ph.D. program. I would like to make an appointment with you if your schedule allows.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your thoughts and hearing from you soon.

Best Regards,

Piegiorgio Lanza
