Hi everybody -
Tibor Goldschwendt, who did his MS research at the Four Eyes Lab and
with the Allosphere Research Group, will defend his MS thesis
presentation tomorrow, Monday, May 16th. His M.S. is with the
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU) Munich, Germany, but he will do
his defense here at UCSB since he did the research here and since his
LMU supervisor, Prof. Andreas Butz, is also currently here on a
Sabbatical visit.
Date: Monday, May 16th
Time: 10:00am -11:00am
Place: 3001 Elings Hall (above MAT conference room)
Due course of this thesis AlloStreamer framework has been designed,
implemented
and applied to a user study. AlloStreamer allows the full surround
simulation of mixed
reality in the AlloSphere, a spherical display of the University of
California, Santa Barbara. Allo-
Streamer, thus, contributes to the simulation of mixed reality in a
virtual world, which resembles
the intended real world usage environment as close as possible. In the
user study AlloStreamer has
been employed to examine the transfer of mixed reality training. More
specifically, the user study
addressed the question, in which virtual reality the training of
firefighters to deal with bushfires is
most effective. The user studies considered three training scenarios,
which differed in the applied
field of regard: (i) a circular 60° representation, (ii) a rectangular
representation with 240° × 60°
and (ii) a full surround representation. The user study has shown that
the training is less effective
the more restricted is the field of regard. The results of the user
study suggest that this kind of
training necessitates a field of regard as complete as possible.
A demonstration of the implemented system will be given in the
AlloSphere after the thesis presentation.
Everyone welcome!
