Hello lab,
You got the call for papers for GSWC 2014 from Alexander below... I just
wanted to add a strong endorsement to submit and/or participate in other
roles.
GSWC is an excellent opportunity to publicize your work within the
department, including to the incoming class of graduate students. Our
lab has had a strong presence at this workshop since its inception, both
as organizers and as presenters, and we have regularly won awards.
Putting together a 2-page abstract based on your current/on-going work
should be relatively quick, writing it for & presenting it to a general
CS audience is very valuable practice!
Cheers,
Steffen

Hello everyone,
We would like to announce the --Call for Papers-- for this year's
Graduate Student Workshop on Computing (GSWC). The workshop is organized
by UCSB CS students and will be held on Friday, October 10th 2014. Like
the previous years we excitedly look forward to showcase the
cutting-edge research in computer science for an audience of faculty,
students and industry representatives, topped off with a relaxed finish
at the CS Fall BBQ at Goleta beach.
The DEADLINE for submission is JULY 1st 2014.
The GSWC adopts a theme each year and invites discussion on that theme
from both, academic and industry perspectives. Nevertheless, submitted
abstracts can pertain any topic in computer science, and do not need to
be directly relevant to the workshop's theme. This year's theme is:
"Towards the Internet of Things and Beyond"
For those of you who are new to GSWC, it is a workshop organized by our
Computer Science Department with the support from our industry sponsors
where graduate students showcase their research work. This entails not
only publishing an abstract of your current research in the workshop
proceedings, but also potentially presenting your work to your fellow
graduate students, faculty, and guests from industry (either through a
presentation or a poster depending on the quality of your abstract). We
hope to create an environment in which graduate students can network,
learn about new projects, and exchange cool research ideas.
Graduate students are requested to submit a 2-PAGE ABSTRACT (the paper)
describing recent and continuing work. Work in all areas of computing
are welcome, and your abstract should be accessible to the majority of
the department.
Submissions should strictly follow the IEEE 2-column LaTeX format
(http://www.computer.org/portal/web/cscps/formatting) and be submitted
as PDFs. The name of the authors should be included in the submitted
PDF. As for any professional conference, submissions have to follow
these guidelines or will be rejected.
Submissions should be made to http://php.cs.ucsb.edu/gswc2014/
Acceptances to GSWC will come in the form of:
- Proceedings: Your abstract will appear in the workshop proceedings
(this is applicable to all accepted papers).
- Presentation: You will be further selected to do a presentation on
your abstract.
- Poster: Your poster will be displayed with an opportunity to discuss
your work during the formal poster session.
Cash prizes have already been secured and will be awarded for best
abstract, presentation, and poster!
The objective of GSWC is to bring you the experience of attending and
presenting at a top-tier conference in computer science. Participate in
order to gain critical skills in presenting your research to the
scientific community. Most labs had representation in the past, and it
would be great to showcase YOUR research too.
