I participated in the Doctoral Consortium at ISMAR last year and found it
to be extremely valuable. It is a great chance to get direct feedback on
your research from the top researchers in AR, and to help form or refine
your thesis direction. I'd encourage any rising 2nd - 4th years to submit!

=========================================================================

The 3rd ISMAR Doctoral Consortium (DC) will take place as part of ISMAR
2014, on the evening of September 8th and all day on September 9th. The
goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to create an opportunity for PhD
students to present their research, discuss their current progress and
plans, and receive constructive criticism and guidance regarding their work
and future career objectives. The Doctoral Consortium is structured around
doctoral students presentations and in-depth discussions between the
students and mentors.

All submissions to the Doctoral Consortium will be reviewed with a view to
selecting a group of students best positioned to receive and act on
constructive feedback: the ideal candidates are those students who are in
the early stage of PhD dissertation research or have just proposed their
dissertation topic for their PhD candidacy. The accepted submissions will
be selected for presentation at the ISMAR2014 Doctoral Consortium and at
the conference poster session.

Accepted students will receive complementary registration to ISMAR 2014.
Lodging (shared room) and partial travel assistance may also be available.
The accepted DC papers will be included in the conference proceedings and
(option upon author’s agreement) archived in IEEE Digital Library.

Submissions/Format
Doctoral Consortium submissions should be a 4-page description of the
applicant’s dissertation work. The submission must be strictly formatted
according to the IEEE VGTC formatting guidelines (
http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~vis/Tasks/camera.html<
http://www.cs.sfu.ca/%7Evis/Tasks/camera.html>). The submission should
contain the following content:

· Research Context and Motivation

· Objectives and Goals of your dissertation research

· Key Background and Literature review

· Hypotheses and Research Questions

· Research Methodologies

· Results to date and Discussions

· Expected contribution and Plan for completion

The DC will include a group dinner on Monday September 8th, and a full day
of presentations and discussion by participants and mentors on Tuesday
September 9th. Each student will get a 1-hour slot, which consists of the
student’s 25-mintue presentation detailing their dissertation research,
general question & answer, and constructive critiques from the designated
mentor(s). Furthermore, the accepted students will be expected to create a
poster (size approximately 3 feet x 4 feet, to-be-confirmed) to be placed
(and participate) during the conference’s poster session.

Topics
We welcome applicants from a broad range of disciplines and approaches that
align with the two main tracks of the ISMAR conference: Science &
Technology (S&T) covering emerging technological capabilities of MR/AR and
the Media professionals, Artists, Social Scientists, Humanity scholars and
Designers (MASH’D) program covering the human side of technology
application.

Submission Deadline: 16 July 2014
Acceptance Notification date: 21 July 2014
