Speaker Peter Testa, Principal, Tester/Weiser Inc., Senior Design Faculty, SCI-Arc

SCI-Arc Robot House, Testa/Weiser 2010
Abstract
The seminar will discuss the conceptual and pedagogical framework for the SCI-Arc Robot
House, a state-of-the-art robotics and simulation lab focused on architecture and media arts.
The presentation will include current research programs, as well as examples of recent projects
by Testa/Weiser at the convergence of computation, computational materials and robotics.
The presentation argues for a new design paradigm and spatial model enabled by multi-modal
techniques of representation and affiliations of matter, motion, and geometry.
Bio
Peter Testa is partner in charge of design at Testa/Weiser Inc. and founding director of the
MIT Emergent Design Group (EDG). Since 2004 he has been a member of the graduate
and post-graduate design faculty at SCI-Arc where in 2010 he initiated the robotics and
simulation lab with Stäubli Robotics. Previously he was associate professor of architecture
at Columbia University GSAPP and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His work is
exhibited at leading museums worldwide and published in international art, architecture, design,
engineering, and scientific journals. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the
Design Arts Award of the National Endowment for the Arts. Testa holds an S.M.Arch.S. from
MIT in History, Theory, and Criticism. He is a global design leader recognized for his innovative
use of advanced composite materials and robotics in architecture.
