TITLE:
An Augmented Reality Approach to Telepresence
by Steffen Gauglitz, PhD Candidate, UCSB
ABSTRACT:
With the widespread deployment of fast data connections and availability
of a variety of sensors for different modalities, the potential of
remote collaboration has greatly increased. While the now ubiquitous
video conferencing applications take advantage of some of these
capabilities, the use of video between remote and local users is limited
largely to passively watching disjoint video feeds, leaving much to be
desired regarding direct interaction with the remote environment. Thus,
videoconference-like applications hit severe limitations when the matter
at hand involves real-world objects or environments.
We suggest that augmented reality is a natural and user-friendly
paradigm to overcome these limits, by allowing a spatially remote user
to explore a physical environment and communicate spatial information,
leading to a more interactive and immersive telepresence experience.
I will describe our ongoing research in this area, which entails
contributions in visual tracking and modeling of the environment, user
interfaces and enabling technologies for world-stabilized remote
pointing and gesturing, proof-of-concept implementations and user
studies.
