Foglab denizens,

There are about three admitted MAT graduate students coming to visit
tomorrow, and we've told them they can go by the Foglab at around 3:10pm for
a brief (~10min) look at the lab. I'm hoping that some of you will be around
to say hi, say a little about what we/you do in the lab, and ask about their
interests.

Can you please let me know who expects to be around then?

Thanks,
	Matthew

Subject: [faculty] MAT Prospective Student Recruitment Day is tomorrow!

Thanks to everybody who answered my previous email by volunteering to be
present to show a slice of MAT to the admitted students who are coming to
visit tomorrow. As it turns out all of the admitted students who have RSVPd
for tomorrow happen to be women (even though we admitted a roughly even
balance of men and women).

Here is the schedule I have put together; of course our actual schedule
tomorrow will vary slightly, but these should be pretty close. All
students and faculty are welcome to attend as much of the day as you'd like,
with the exception of lunch, which has a limited number of people who have
already been directly invited.

10:00 Welcome / gathering: Conference Room / Matt, Curtis

10:45-11:45 AlloSphere demo: Matt, Ryan, JoAnn

11:45-12:30 student demos in Elings
Karl Yerkes: disky, tweakyr, AlloPi, SailBOT - Systemics
Paul Jacobs: iPad apps, maybe ferrofluid - Systemics
            Charlie Roberts: Gibber, Interface.js - 2001

12:30-1walk to Beachside for lunch

1-2:15 Lunch (by invitation only - sorry)

2:15-2:30 back to Elings (Matt and JoAnn will drive the admitted students to
save time)

2:30-2:50 ExpViz lab: Swarm robotics camera, and data visualization

2:50-3:10 Translab: motion tracking, computer/app control of the drones,
transforming flight data into sound, image, immersion, interaction, and
choregraphy, plus EEG and generatve work

3:10-3:20 4Eyes lab: open but not necessarily any presentations

3:20-5 Campus walking tour: Phelps, Music, Art, UCen... Matt and Marko

5:30 Formal closing / conclusion / wrap-up / hand-off to students / guava
feast: Elings Hallway / Matt

5:45-6:00 Another walk from Elings to Goleta Beach (preferably led by one or
more current students)

6:00 SHARP: Goleta Beach BBQ dinner hosted by current MAT students,
organized by Karl (Thanks, Karl!)

Dusk: Current students and admitted students adjourn to the Mercury Lounge
for further hanging out

I'm planning to spend essentially the entire day with the admitted students,
so texting or calling my cell phone will probably be the best way to get
real-time schedule updates, etc: 510-206-9728.

Thanks again to all who have volunteered to participate.

best,
-Matt

visit/recruitment day on Friday March 15 to which we are inviting the
applicants whom we offered admission to MAT for Fall 2013. With luck there
will be something like 10 people coming to campus that day to try to figure
out whether they want to become MAT grad students. Of course we want to
impress them with the breadth and depth of MAT research, the labs,
facilities, and other resources, the talents and personalities of the
faculty and students, etc., etc. We will of course show all the MAT labs
in Elings Hall (preferably with activity in each one), other MAT-oriented
locations throughout the campus (e.g., in Music, Art, and Phelps), as well
as bring them to lunch at the Beachside. I understand that students may
also organize some kind of informal party-like event in the evening, such as
a beach BBQ.
