Could you please let me know if you have submitted or are planning to 
submit to GSWC? This is a great opportunity to practice presentations 
and present research (including to the incoming class of grad students). 
The lab has traditionally had a pretty strong presence, and I think it 
would be great to keep that up...

The Graduate Student Workshop on Computing (GSWC) deadline is in one
week (July 5). Now it is the ideal time to submit your awesome work!
Don't be shy, it is a great occasion to showcase your research to the
department and your possible future employers, and to win cash prices! ;)

Here is the call for papers, for those who missed it:

Hello everyone!

Just like every year around this time, we would like to announce
the--Call for Papers--for this year's Graduate Student Workshop on
Computing (GSWC) 2013 which will be held on Friday, October 4th.

The DEADLINE for submission is JULY 5th.

For those of you who are new to GSWC, it is a workshop sponsored by
the Computer Science Department where graduate students showcase their
research work. This entails not only publishing an abstract of your
current research in the workshop proceeding, but also potentially
presenting your work to your fellow graduate students, faculty, and
guests from industry (either through a presentation or poster
depending on the quality of your abstract). We are also looking for
representation from nearby universities, in the hope to create an
environment in which graduate students can get to know each other, learn
about new projects, and exchange cool research ideas.

Graduate students are called to submit a 2-PAGE ABSTRACT describing
recent and continuing work. Work in all areas of computing are
welcome, and your abstract should be accessible to the majority of the
department.

Submissions should strictly follow the IEEE 2-column LaTeX format
(http:www.computer.org/portal/web/cscps/formatting
<http://www.computer.org/portal/web/cscps/formatting>) and be submitted
as PDFs. The name of the authors should be included in the submitted PDF.
Submissions have to follow these guidelines or will be rejected.

Submissions should be made to http://mamet.cs.ucsb.edu/.

Acceptances to GSWC will come in the form of:

- Proceedings: Your abstract will appear in the workshop proceedings
(this is applicable to all accepted papers).
- Presentation: You will be further selected to do a presentation on
your abstract.
- Poster: Your poster will be displayed with an opportunity to discuss
your work during the formal poster session.

Cash prizes have already been secured and will be awarded for best
abstract, presentation, and poster!

As usual, the GSWC will be followed by the CS Fall BBQ.

GSWC is designed to bring you the experience of attending and presenting
at a top-tier conference in computer science. Participate in order to
gain critical skills in showing your research. Practice makes perfect,
and where better to do so than in our
supportive environment :)

Additionally, GSWC adopts a theme each year and invites discussion on
that theme from both an academic perspective and an industry
perspective. We invite a keynote speaker, and have members of the
industry to serve on a panel to discuss that
topic, followed by Q&A. Over the last years GSWC has established as a
great venue for interaction with industry and looking for internships.
The theme of this year's workshop will be announced in the next months.
Submitted abstract can pertain any topic in computer science, and do not
need to be relevant to the workshop's theme.
