Subject: Volunteer for SciTrek 2nd - 5th grade science outreach *
*SciTrek:* How Science Works is a science outreach program at UCSB seeking
undergraduate and graduate students to volunteer in 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade
classrooms around Santa Barbara.* If you are interested in volunteering
come to our sign-up session/fundraiser on Wednesday, January 9th from
5:00-8:00pm at Silvergreens in Isla Vista. If you buy dinner at
Silvergreens and tell them that you are with SciTrek we will get a portion
of the proceeds.** Darby and Bre will be there to answer all of your
questions. If you cannot make it to the fundraiser and still want to
sign-up e-mail scitrekadmin at chem.ucsb.edu.
**
**What is SciTrek? *
SciTrek’s main focus is to allow 2nd -5th grade students to experience the
scientific process first hand by designing and carrying out their own
experiments. In addition, SciTrek strives to give teachers and UCSB
students’ an appreciation of the benefits of facilitating student-centered
inquiry activities in the classroom.
*What SciTrek is seeking? *
We are looking for UCSB undergraduate and graduate students who are
interested in guiding students through the experimental process. Each
module is centered on one topic and consists of 5-8 sessions lasting no
more than an hour each, and occurs over the course of two to three weeks
(rides will be provided to and from UCSB for each module). Our 2nd – 5th
grade students bond with the SciTrek volunteers, therefore, we are looking
for students who can be present for the majority of the module session
dates within one classroom, see a list of our events here (additional
modules will be posted in upcoming weeks). Before going to the schools you
must attend a short module specific orientation (1-2 hours) to prepare you
for the upcoming module. In addition, a senior SciTrek member will be
present and helping in each classroom.
*
**Why volunteer? *
This is an awesome opportunity for college students to conduct inquiry
within a 2nd – 5th grade classrooms, not to mention getting involved in a
new program that truly gets students to design their own experiments. We
want you to inspire 2nd -5th grade students’ to have a deeper understanding
of the scientific process while enabling them to develop their critical
thinking skills.
*
*****How do I get involved? *
If you are interested in finding out more about SciTrek and would like to
get involved please come to the sign-up session/fundraiser (contact us if
you cannot attend orientation) and sign up on our email list serve here to
