I am forwarding an email regarding opportunities for study in Finland under
the Fulbright program. For people interested in computer vision or
human-computer interaction, I have good contacts at a couple universities in
Finland who would be happy to host a UCSB Fulbright Scholar.

Subject: Fulbright-Finland message #32, February 7, 2013 / Promoting
Fulbright opportunities to Americans
Dear Fulbrighters,
Greetings from Finland! And welcome to all new subscribers to our
Fulbright-Finland network!
This message is particularly focused on opportunities for Americans to apply
for Fulbright awards to Finland. We hope you can help us promote our grant
programs, and Finland, by forwarding some of this information to your
students and colleagues who might be interested in considering a scholarly
visit to Finland.
FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR AWARDS
On the U.S. program side, the application period for the 2014-2015 Fulbright
American Scholar Grants to Finland is now open. Your help to get this
information out to interested prospective grantees will be very much
appreciated. We hope you will share your Finnish experience with others and
encourage them to consider applying for a Fulbright grant to Finland.
The deadline for the 2014-2015 Fulbright scholar applications to Finland is
August 1, 2013. Interested applicants receive further information from the
Fulbright Center website Grant Programs section at
<http://www.fulbright.fi/en/grant-programs>
http://www.fulbright.fi/en/grant-programs. Information is also available
from CIES; the Distinguished Chairs at <http://www.cies.org/chairs>
www.cies.org/chairs and for all the other awards at
<http://www.cies.org/us_scholars/us_awards>
www.cies.org/us_scholars/us_awards
SHORT-TERM GRANTS FOR US SCHOLARS
Sometimes a semester or a full academic year is too long to be away from
home. In addition to the traditional one or two semester awards, the
Fulbright Program offers opportunities for shorter visits under the
Fulbright Specialists Program that has now been reinstated for Europe! More
information about that can be found at <http://www.cies.org/Specialists/>
http://www.cies.org/Specialists/ and on our website:
ields/fulbright-specialists-program>
http://www.fulbright.fi/en/professionals-specialists-and-teachers-various-fi
elds/fulbright-specialists-program .
FULBRIGHT STUDENT AWARDS
The application period for the 2014-2015 US student awards will open in May,
2013 and the deadline for applications is usually in mid-October. Further
information is available at <http://us.fulbrightonline.org/home.html>
http://us.fulbrightonline.org/home.html .
TEACHER AWARDS
The Fulbright Center in Finland also participates in the Distinguished
Fulbright Awards in Teaching program that sends highly accomplished primary
and secondary school teachers from the U.S. to Finland and brings Finnish
teachers to the U.S for a semester-long program. More information is
available at

eaching-program>

INFORMATION
To assist you in talking with your colleagues and contacts about our grants,
we have prepared brochures, handouts, and PowerPoints about the Finnish
Fulbright Program. We would be happy to send you the material if you would
find it helpful. Just let us know! As an example, I have added an
announcement at the end of this message with a compilation of Fulbright
programs available for Americans planning to come to Finland with direct
links to further information. Please feel free to forward the announcement
to your friends and colleagues. In addition, the Fulbright Center website
<http://www.fulbright.fi> http://www.fulbright.fi Grant Programs section
includes plenty of information about the programs. Destination Finland
section, on the other hand, is designed to discuss Finland as a country and
the opportunities it offers.
INVITING YOUR FINNISH COLLEAGUES TO THE US
Please note that there are opportunities within the Fulbright Program for
you or for your colleagues to invite a Finnish scholar to lecture and
collaborate with you in the United States. The Scholar-in-Residence Program
(SIR) offers lecturing grants for an academic semester or a year. To learn
more about hosting a Finnish colleague through the SIR Program, please
visit: <http://www.cies.org/sir/> http://www.cies.org/sir/ Additionally,
the ASLA-Fulbright Research Grants for Scholars also include a possibility
to do some teaching during the grant period in the United States. And as
usual, the Center will be awarding over dozen grants for graduate students
for study and/or research projects in the United States for 2014-2015.
VISITING FINLAND
If you have a chance to visit this part of the world, do remember that our
doors at the Fulbright Center are always open to you! To entice you to
visit, there are several events scheduled that might coincide with your
travel calendar. The Orientation Seminar for our new Finnish grantees will
take place on Monday 13 May 2013 and for our arriving US grantees on 27 30
August 2013. Both seminars include a reception which you are also welcome
to attend if you happen to be in Finland. The America in Living Color
Seminar sponsored by the Fulbright Center will be held in Tampere on March
14-15, and the American Voices Seminar will be held in Turku in October
2013. The ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association is also organizing several
events and you are always warmly welcome to join in those whenever here --
one coming up is their 6th annual ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Golf Tournament in
June.
Finally, I would like to warmly thank everyone for your feedback over the
recent months and for keeping us informed of your news as well as of
suggestions for services and outreach. Please continue to send them! And
since our biannual Fulbright Center News is going to print soon we also have
a chance to put your news in the Connections Corner column, if youd like.
Parhain terveisin / with best wishes,
Terhi Mölsä

by the Fulbright Center in Helsinki. It is a mailing list for all former
American Fulbright grantees to Finland. The list helps us share our news and
keep in touch with our alumni after they have returned home from their
Fulbrights in Finland. In addition, subscribers to the list include many
Finnish Fulbright alumni who are currently residing in the United States. A
few brief updates are sent annually. Your contact information is kept
confidential. However, we reserve the right to share it with the Finnish
Embassy in Washington DC and the two Finnish Consulates Generals (NYC and
LA) for the sole purpose of communication of their events, projects, and
meetings that might be of interest to you.
Please keep us informed of any changes in your contact information, so that
you will receive our mailings also in the future. Our new database is now
quite functional and seeking to have more and current data from you! For
the mailing list, the e-mail address is naturally needed, but we would
appreciate having your current postal address as well. If you should not
want to receive our messages, please notify us by sending an e-mail message
to <mailto:office at fulbright.fi> office at fulbright.fi.
We would also like to ask for your assistance in reaching other alumni. If
you are in touch with a fellow "Finland-Fulbrighter" who is not yet on the
list, please let them know about the Fulbright-Finland list and ask them to
join by sending a quick e-mail to <mailto:office at fulbright.fi>
office at fulbright.fi.
Thank you!
