It would mean that you take an interest in the program and are ready to 
volunteer for
certain mentorship task that may come up when we have our first batch of 
trainees.
If you have an affinity with network science I urge you to consider it. 
The benefit to you,
apart from an entry in your CV, would be that you will get to discuss 
research projects
with incoming IGERT fellows, enabling you to start new collaborations 
and portray your
research agenda.
