Hi all,

Since my MAE is scheduled on next Monday, I'm going to do a practice talk tomorrow at MAT conference room right after the lab meeting (around 3:30pm).
I would appreciate if anyone could attend and give me some feedback.

The abstract is attached below:

> Date and Time: Monday 12/16 at 9am
> Location: CS Conference Room (HFH1132)
> Committee: Tobias Höllerer (Chair), Xifeng Yan, Matthew Turk and John O’Donovan
>
> Title: Reliable Information in Social Computing and Visual Analytics
>
> Abstract:
>
> Social computing is changing the paradigm of information production, processing, and sharing.
> As information sources shift from institutions to individual users and online communities, efficient ways to find and understand reliable information become increasingly important. The sheer amount of available information as well as its complex provenance and distribution patterns make it difficult for people to reliably interpret and use it. Users encounter problems of scalability, complexity, and subjectivity of the reliable information.
>
> In this talk, we first define what reliable information is, and discuss approaches from the literature to extract information from online data effectively and efficiently and turn it into actionable knowledge. Second, we present a perspective from two fields of study: Social Computing and Visual Analytics, and discuss related research in each of those fields. Third, we will discuss potential reciprocal effects between quality of content and its visual representation in the information consumption process.
>
> In summary, we will talk about research opportunities in using visual analytics approaches for reliable information identification and extraction in the context of social computing, and discuss our own work in credibility modeling as a starting point in this direction.
>
> Everyone Welcome!

Thanks and cheers!

Jay
