I demoed Ingress while interning this summer and am trying to get beta
invites for the lab -- I'll keep you guys posted on that
The one thing Ingress lacks (at least the version I tested) is direct
augmentation of the viewfinder. It is almost if not entirely GPS based. It
would be really neat if you could hold up your phone and see the "portals"
that are nearby. Real-time localization on a global scale is exactly what I
want to do my thesis on, so hopefully we'll have that technology soon!
Btw, this lab put out app called Field Trip. Again, GPS based, but still a
good step for consumer AR products.
