Good morning everybody,

I would like to inform you that Professor Zoe Wood from Cal Poly, San
Luis Obispo will be giving a special guest lecture for MAT 594G / CS
280 on Monday, 11/19, at 11 AM in Elings 1605.

Dr. Wood's research area is computer graphics, specifically geometric
modeling, so those of you who study the possibilities for different
shapes and forms may find the material of interest. Prior to CalPoly,
she worked at Microsoft Research, Hewlett-Packard Labs, and NASA Ames
Research Center. She received her PhD from CalTech in 2003. An
abstract for the talk is below.

Hope to see you there!

How do we represent the geometry of the world in computer graphics
applications: an overview of geometric modeling

Computer graphics tackles the problem of representing the geometry of
the world in a discrete computational setting (your computer). But
what is the best representation for your couch, your house, your city,
or the clouds in the sky? This talk will provide an overview of the
general representations of geometric objects for computer graphics
applications and the implications of those representations for
downstream computations like animation and rendering. This talk will
also explore the implications of geometric representations for
graphics hardware and for artists working with those representations.
Data acquisition of real world models will also be addressed.
