**** ISMAR 2012 -- Call for Doctoral Consortium ***
**** Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center, Georgia Tech, November

****
The inaugural ISMAR Doctoral Consortium will take place as part of ISMAR
2012, on the evening of November 4th and all day on November 5th. The
goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to create an opportunity for PhD
students to present their research, discuss their current progress and
future plans, and receive constructive criticism and guidance regarding
their future work and career objectives. The Doctoral Consortium is
structured around doctoral students presentations and in depth
discussions between the students and mentors.
All abstracts submitted to the Doctoral Consortium will be reviewed with
a view to selecting a group of students best positioned to receive and
act on constructive feedback: the ideal candidates are those students
who are midway through their PhD studies, having just proposed their
dissertation work and entered candidacy. The best submissions will be
selected for presentation at the ISMAR2012 Doctoral Consortium and the
ISMAR poster session.
Accepted students will receive complementary registration to ISMAR, as
well as lodging and travel assistance.
* Submissions/Format *
Doctoral Consortium papers should include a clear presentation of their
PhD research direction, including discussion of their PhD research in
the context of AR/VR and related fields, a summary of the work done so
far, and their current plan for completion. All submissions should be no
longer than 4 pages, in the same format as is used for the main
conference papers.
The Doctoral Consortium will include a group dinner on Sunday November
4th, and a full day of presentations and discussion by participants.
Each student will give an in-depth presentation of their work and
receive constructive critiques from the mentors (we expect each student
to have almost one hour devoted to them). There will also be time for
discussing professionalization issues.
The accepted students will also be expected to create a poster (size
approximately 4 x 8 feet) about their work, to allow attendees to
quickly familiarize themselves with each others work, and to be shown
during the conference poster session (providing further opportunities
for interaction with, and feedback from, ISMAR attendees).
* Topics *
For this inaugural year of the ISMAR Doctoral Consortium, we welcome
applicants from a broad range of disciplines and approaches that inform
the “Science and Technology” track of the ISMAR conference, including
AR/VR, wearable computing, HCI, social informatics, information
technology, cognitive science, and related fields. Applicants should be
at or near candidacy (i.e., ready to propose their dissertation work, or
just after proposal) and be actively engaged in their dissertation research.
* Submission *
Submissions due: August 19, 2012
Notification: September 3, 2012
All submissions will be acknowledged by email; submissions received
after this date will not be considered. Participants will be chosen with
an emphasis on diversity of topics, participants, approaches, geographic
location and institutions. At most one student per institution will be
accepted.
These materials should be e-mailed to
the DC co-chairs, at dc_chairs at ismar12.org:
- Dr. Si Jung “Jun” Kim, University of Central Florida
- Dr. Bruce Thomas, University of South Australia
