Hey everyone,
As you may or may not be aware, I am not particularly politically minded.
However, my friend Rob is constantly active in the UC political scene,
working to improve the UC's and our student union's policies. I can speak
for him as an awesome, genuine, and clever guy and I know he works very
hard in our best interest. So if you have some time today or tomorrow,
please step out to one of the voting booths and take 5 minutes to vote for
him. =]
Rob is a grad student in the math department, and aims to be the next
Southern VP of our union. You can stop by and vote today or tomorrow:
*Tuesday and Wednesday*
Arbor: 9 - 4
Courtyard Café (aka, Nano-Café): 11 - 2
*Wednesday Only*
San Clemente, in front of Donner: 5 - 8
Here is a little more about Rob and a link to their Facebook group...
(Thanks again!)
This is an important election because the SVP is a member of our union's
> E-Board, the body which makes most of the day-to-day decisions about how
> our union is run. Right now, UCSB has no representation on this board
> despite having the highest membership level of any campus in Southern
> California. Rob is going up against a candidate from UCLA backed by a
> group called AWDU, which built up a powerful political machine to win the
> last election, so he really needs our support.
> Right now our union is nearing a crisis point. Statewide membership
> levels are at the lowest they've been within memory, placing us in a
> weakened position at the bargaining table and as defenders of public
> education. Rob is a capable organizer who can turn this around. Earlier
> this year he lead a hugely successful membership drive at UCSB, which both
> increased UCSB membership levels and involvement. He's also played a large
> role in passing a bill through the State Senate which would give Research
> Assistants collective bargaining rights.
