Besides the "coolness" factor, I think it could be used in anything that
could benefit from knowing how light travels and interacts with the world,
e.g., inferring surface materials. Or scene relighting - capturing the
light travel paths and then manipulating those to create new images. One of
the articles say the equipment costs $250,000, and it also looks quite
bulky, so it seems there's still a long way to go for making this more
practical. But I think the initial results are very interesting.
