Dear Colleague,
Once again, we are pleased to offer positions in our Summer Intern
Program at the 3D Virtual and Mixed Environments Section at the Naval
Research Laboratory in Washington, DC.
We seek graduate or advanced undergraduate students with strong
backgrounds in visual analytics, human-computer interaction, virtual or
augmented reality, computer vision, and related areas. Direct
references are most welcome, but please post this announcement if none
of your own students are interested.
The top-priority project is the design and implementation of a
vision-based tracking system for the gaze and gestures of multiple
people in front of a U-shaped display wall which is envisioned to be
operational in Spring 2010. We have ten cameras (with IR lenses) and
three machines in a graphics cluster which we believe we can dedicate to
the image processing and computation necessary. Therefore, this year,
computer vision experience will be a higher priority than in the past;
we encourage applicants from this discipline. Other potential projects
will include user studies in mobile augmented reality; a computer
graphics background is more relevant to such work.
Past interns have come from UNC Charlotte, George Mason Univ., UC Davis,
Univ. of Florida, Univ. of Missouri, Cornell Univ., UNC-Chapel Hill,
Univ. of Pittsburgh, George Washington Univ., Georgia Tech, Univ. of
Illinois, Iowa State Univ., UI-Chicago, Lehigh Univ., and SUNY-Stony
Brook. We have been very pleased with the results, and our interns have
enjoyed the experience with several returning for multiple years.
Please note that due to current DoD regulations, we are able to consider
only those applicants who hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
(green card). A PDF announcement is attached. Interested parties may
contact me at the email address below for more information.
Best regards,
Mark
